In Ayurveda, there are 16 rituals described for children to improve their immunity, physical, and mental health. Swarnaprashana, also known as Swarna-Bindu-Prashana, is one of these essential rituals. It has been practiced for over 5000 years and is recognized as a natural, time-tested method for enhancing children's growth, memory, and immunity. Swarnaprashana involves the oral administration of Swarna Bhasma (gold ash) mixed with honey and ghee, often fortified with herbs like Brahmi (Bacopa Monniri), Sankhapushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis), Vacha (Acorus Calamus), Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra), and Guduchi (Tinospora cardifolia). This unique Ayurvedic technique is safe and effective in strengthening the immune system of children.

Swarnaprashana can be given from birth up to 16 years of age. If administered regularly for 6 months, it is said that a child will become Shrutadhara, meaning they can remember whatever they hear just once. It improves hearing, speech, and acuity while reducing temper issues, attention deficit, bedwetting, learning difficulties, hyperactivity, and other psychosomatic problems. The best results are seen if given consistently for at least 12 months.

Benefits of Swarnaprashana

Swarna Bhasma has been proven to possess antioxidants, antidepressant, antibacterial, and antirheumatic properties. It also acts as a nervine stimulant and enhances overall health by increasing lifespan, intelligence, memory, and skin glow while preventing various diseases. In addition, Swarnaprashana boosts physical and mental performance, enhances strength, and increases endurance. It accelerates brain growth, especially during the critical development phase of 1 to 16 years of age.

Ingredients and Their Benefits

  • Madhu (Honey): Honey is rich in essential vitamins and minerals like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Iron, and Calcium. It nourishes the body and has antiseptic, antifungal, and antibacterial properties.
  • Ghee: Ghee enhances memory and intelligence, aids digestion, and ensures proper movement of nutrients and waste. It also improves complexion, voice, tenderness of the body, and vitality.
  • Shankhapushpi (Convolvulus Pluricaulis): A natural tonic for improving memory and concentration in children. It controls irritability, mental debility, and sleep disturbances.
  • Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza Glabra): Enhances immunity by stimulating macrophages (white blood cells) and serves as an antiviral agent and rejuvenator.
  • Guduchi (Tinospora Cordifolia): A potent antimicrobial that boosts immunity by increasing antibody levels, helping the body fight infections.
  • Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera): Known for its mood-stabilizing and rejuvenating properties.
  • Vacha (Acorus Calamus): Acts as a brain tonic, improving memory and treating stomach ailments. It also enhances blood circulation.
  • Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri): Acclaimed for improving intelligence and cognitive abilities, Brahmi enhances thinking, learning, and memory.

Swarnaprashana promotes the holistic development of children, contributing to increased Medha (mental ability), Agni (digestive power), Bala (strength), and Aayu Vardhana (prolonged lifespan). It brings a positive attitude, improves complexion, and protects against various infections and seasonal diseases by strengthening the immune system.

Administration of Swarnaprashana

It is best administered every month on Pushya Nakshatra for optimal benefits. The rays of the Pushya Nakshatra, an auspicious day that occurs every 27 days, are believed to enhance the medicinal properties of gold. The recommended dosage varies by age:

  • From birth to 1 year: 2 drops
  • 1 to 5 years: 4 drops
  • 5 to 10 years: 6 drops
  • 10 to 16 years: 8 drops

It is important to administer Swarnaprashana regularly on Pushya Nakshatra days to maximize its benefits. Consulting a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for proper guidance on dosage and administration is always recommended.
